Moment of Truth: 12 Brews of Christmas – Blood Orange
I had been stalling a bit to taste this beer since it smelled like toe jam when I bottled it. It looked really nasty. For sure I thought this was headed for the drain. Now I’m sorry I only made three bottles. It is surprisingly delicious.
This was Brew#5 of “The 12 Brews of Christmas Project.” It was made using blood orange tea, brown sugar and a few Mosaic Hops. The tea was primarily hibiscus flowers which sounded like it would have potential for interesting flavor. The flowers seem to be responsible for the gorgeous amber color but I really don’t pick up a lot of hibiscus flavor. It has more of a citrus profile and dried orange peel appears to be adding the bitterness rather than the hops.
As you can see, there is very little carbonation. I’ve noticed that brews with very little or no malt require more time outside the fridge. I will hoard my last two bottles and see if they get a little more bubbly in a few weeks.
