Moment of Truth: Northern Brewer Festivus Miracle Kit

Posted on Nov 15, 2015 by in Beer, Kits | 1 comment

This brew was made exactly according to the instructions provided with the Festivus Miracle 1 gallon beer recipe kit from Northern Brewer. I was a bit suspicious about the ingredients but restrained myself from correcting anything and went ahead with their recipe.

This brew is very flat with almost no carbonation. I am not sure I can send it to my “beer hospital” for fixing. The mouth feel is surprisingly good but too bitter for my taste. I don’t like hoppy beers and was hoping that this one wasn’t going to be too bitter. Sadly it is.

It seems like it could be a good everyday beer with some tweaking. Perhaps different hops or cutting back on the hops would help. I feel like it could also be a tad sweeter. Maybe adding some raisins or dates. It is a very dry beer. Of course we need to do something about the lack of carbonation. I think there was too much malt in here and those fizz tablets have done me wrong before. Here’s a tip, never use the fizz candy drops. They don’t seem to work at all. I have tried them before with similar results.

Oh well, this is one I won’t try again. Now I’m beginning to wonder if testing kits is worth my time. I’m also wondering if these companies actually test their 1 gallon conversions.

Live and learn.

  1. I just opened up two bottles of the same brew I made and used fizz tabs with the same results. No carbonation at all. Its a real shame since its got great flavor otherwise.
